It most certainly is. Let’s look into why:

Prediabetes is a non-medical term referring to the metabolic condition of people who are at high risk of developing Type 2 Diabetes along with future cardiovascular disease and have elevated blood sugar levels that are not high enough for an official Type 2 Diabetes diagnosis. -You may also have heard other terms such as ‘impaired glucose tolerance (IGT)’, ‘impaired fasting glucose (IFG)’, ‘borderline diabetes’ referring to this condition. People with prediabetes do not have any diabetes symptoms -by the time they develop any, they already most likely have Type 2 Diabetes. The risk factors for developing prediabetes are the same as for Type 2 Diabetes, these include having a family history of diabetes, ethnicity and being overweight or obese.

The good news is that with an early diagnosis and the right support, prediabetes progressing into Type 2 Diabetes can be prevented, along with any potential future cardiovascular disease!

The most effective treatments is lifestyle change: this includes eating a healthy balanced diet, losing weight (if overweight) and incorporating regular physical activity. Such measures can help reduce insulin resistance and therefore make the insulin secreted by the pancreas more effective at controlling blood glucose levels.

The recommended healthy, balanced diet is the same as for everyone, the idea that you need ‘special foods’ if you have pre-diabetes or diabetes, is a myth! You should aim to eat a diet low in saturated fat, with adequate protein, high in fibre and with plenty of (non-starchy) vegetables and fruits (such as berries).
